In this paper, we examine how journal and ethnography field notes in Jugyou Kenkyu (lesson study) help teachers to understand the diverse range of talents and abilities of their students. Especially, we focus on how ethnography field note and reflective papers (karate) help teachers to change their assumptions about student learning. The data presented in this paper come from our research in Ando Elementary School, a typical municipal elementary school in Shizuoka, Japan. We employed a case...

Diffusion Limited Aggregation (DLA) is a notoriously difficult model for crystal growth introduced in 1981 by Sander and Witten. We consider a variation on DLA in 1 dimension generated by a random walk with large jumps. The growth rate of the diameter of the N particle aggregate depends on the tail of the step distribution, and exhibits three phase transitions when the walk steps have 1, 2 or 3 finite moments. ©2006 Microsoft Corporation. We discuss a system comprising two nonlinear (Kerr-like) oscillators coupled mutually by a nonlinear interaction. The system is excited by an external coherent field that is resonant to the frequency of one of the oscillators. We show that the coupler evolution can be closed within a finite set of $n$-photon states, analogously as in the \textit{nonlinear quantum scissors} model. Moreover, for this type of evolution our system can be treated as a \textit{Bell-like states} generator. Thanks to...

We present bipartite Bell-type inequalities which allow the two partners to use some non-local resource. Such inequality can only be violated if the parties use a resource which is more non-local than the one permitted by the inequality. We introduce a family of N-inputs non-local machines, which are generalizations of the well-known PR-box. Then we construct Bell-type inequalities that cannot be violated by strategies that use one these new machines. Finally we discuss implications for the...

The purpose of this research was to investigate how an organization's culture can have an effect on formal mentoring. Specifically, this thesis sought to determine if perceptions among gender, ethnicity, and organizational position differ for mentoring and organizational culture. Additionally, this thesis sought to determine if any correlations may exist between organizational culture and formal mentoring overall.

Chinese involvement and influence in Latin America have increased exponentially. The search for energy resources and other commodities has forced China to venture into global markets with a fervor that is causing consternation among Western nations. The United States can no longer ignore the presence of Chinese involvement in Latin America. This paper assesses the correlation between Chinese ideological and tactical theories and current economic political and military involvement of China in...

We compute expectation values of Wilson loops in q-deformed 2d Yang-Mills on a Riemann surface and show that they give invariants of knots in 3-manifolds which are circle bundles over the Riemann surface. The areas of the loops play an essential role in encoding topological information about the extra dimension, and they are quantized to integer or half integer values.

During the last years significant progress has been made in the understanding of the confinement of quarks and gluons. However, this progress has been made in two directions, which are at first sight very different. On the one hand, topological configurations seem to play an important role in the formation of the static quark-anti-quark potential. On the other hand, when studying Green's functions, the Faddeev-Popov operator seems to be of importance, especially its spectrum near zero. To...

No-core shell model (NCSM) calculations using ab initio effective interactions are very successful in reproducing experimental nuclear spectra. The main theoretical approach is the use of effective operators, which include correlations left out by the truncation of the model space to a numerically tractable size. We review recent applications of the effective operator approach, within a NCSM framework, to the renormalization of the nucleon-nucleon interaction, as well as scalar and tensor...

Hadron production and lepton-pair production in e+e- collisions are studied with data collected with the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies sqrt{s}=192-208GeV. Using a total integrated luminosity of 453/pb, 36057 hadronic events and 12863 lepton-pair events are selected. The cross sections for hadron production and lepton-pair production are measured for the full sample and for events where no high-energy initial-state-radiation photon is emitted prior to the collisions. Lepton-pair...

The cross section for the process $e^+e^-\to\pi^+\pi^-$ is measured in the c.m. energy range 1.04-1.38 GeV from 995 000 selected collinear events including 860000 $e^+e^-$ events, 82000 $\mu^+\mu^-$ events, and 33000 $\pi^+\pi^-$ events. The systematic and statistical errors of measuring the pion form factor are equal to 1.2-4.2 and 5-13%, respectively.

We demonstrate that a fluidized bed of hard spheres during defluidization displays properties associated with formation of a glass. The final state is rate dependent, and as this state is approached, the bed exhibits heterogeneity with increasing time and length scales. The formation of a glass results in the loss of fluidization and an arrest of macroscopic particle motion. Microscopic motion persists in this state, but the bed can be jammed by application of a small increase in flow rate....

The local differential tunneling conductance on a Zn impurity in a disordered d-wave superconductors is studied. Quantum interference between many impurities leads to definitive quasiparticle spectra. We suggest that an elaborate analysis on impurity-induced spectra with quantum interference effect included may be able to pin down the sign and strength of the scattering potential of a Zn impurity in low density limit. Numerical simulations calculated with appropriately determined impurity...

We construct an algorithm for suppressing the transitions of a quantum mechanical system, initially prepared in a subspace P of the full Hilbert space of the system, to outside this subspace by subjecting it to a sequence of unequally spaced short-duration pulses. Each pulse multiplies the amplitude of the vectors in the subspace by -1. The number of pulses required by the algorithm to limit the leakage probability to $\epsilon$ in time $T$ increases as $T \exp[ \sqrt{\log(T^2/\epsilon)}]$,...

We highlight similarities between recently discovered Rotating Radio Transients and X-ray Dim Isolated Neutron Stars. In particular, it is shown that X-ray Dim Isolated Neutron Stars have a birthrate comparable to that of Rotating Radio Transients. On the contrary, magnetars have too low a formation rate to account for the bulk of the radio transient population. The consequences of the recent detection of a thermal X-ray source associated with one of the Rotating Radio Transients on the...

We argue that rich star clusters take at least several local dynamical times to form, and so are quasi-equilibrium structures during their assembly. Observations supporting this conclusion include morphologies of star-forming clumps, momentum flux of protostellar outflows from forming clusters, age spreads of stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) and other clusters, and the age of a dynamical ejection event from the ONC. We show that these long formation timescales are consistent with the...
